Every VFX Software updates now feels like an excuse to jack up the price. they’re just slapping “AI” onto everything to make it sound new, when it’s really just minor usability tweaks.
Honestly, Mocha used to be the gold standard for planar tracking. Now it’s starting to feel like another overpriced app trying to cash in on AI hype. At this rate, they’ll probably add AI emoji masking next and bump it up another ₹10K.
So what’s new this time?
The big headline is “AI Face Detection.” Sounds fancy until you realize it just auto-detects faces and throws a simple ellipse mask on them. Great if you’re blurring out someone in a news clip, maybe. But for anyone doing actual VFX work? Not really helping.
They also updated their AI rotoscoping tool Matte Assist ML so now you can convert splines to AI masks and vice versa. Cool, I guess?
There’s also a “Locked Shot” option in the 3D tracking tools now. It helps solve moving objects in static camera shots. Plus some export presets are now in JSON so you can mess with them outside the app. Again, fine. But these are maintenance updates, not game-changers.
Now here’s the part that really stings the price. All of this barely noticeable fluff comes with a bump in cost across the board.
Here’s what looks like in Indian Rupees:
- ₹63,800 for the basic plugin license (was ₹57,000)
- ₹91,300 for all plugins (was ₹82,000)
- ₹1,37,300 for standalone plus all plugins (was ₹1,25,000)
Monthly subs:
- ₹4,000/month for single plugin (up from ₹3,100)
- ₹5,300/month for all plugins (up from ₹4,100)
- ₹8,000/month for the standalone app (up from ₹6,200)
Annual subs:
- ₹27,000/year (was ₹24,000)
- ₹36,200/year (was ₹32,000)
- ₹54,500/year (was ₹48,000)
If you’re not already locked into Mocha, might be time to start looking at cheaper, more focused alternatives.
Because this trend? Not looking good.
