Foundry to Discontinue Development of Modo 3D Software

London, UK — Foundry, a renowned provider of creative software for the media and entertainment industries, has announced a strategic decision to end the development of its popular 3D modeling tool, Modo. The company will release Modo 17.1 later this year, marking the final iteration of the software as Foundry shifts focus to its core offerings and seeks to develop new solutions aligned with industry needs.

As part of the wind-down, Foundry assures active Modo users that support will be provided through the remainder of their contracts. Additionally, customers have the option to secure an extended 10-year license, enabling them to continue using Modo for years to come, even as official development concludes.

This decision reflects Foundry’s focus on adapting to a rapidly changing media landscape, allowing the company to concentrate resources on emerging solutions designed to serve the evolving requirements of the media and entertainment community.

Modo  is a 3D modeling, rendering, and texturing software developed by Foundry, originally launched by Luxology in 2004.

Known for its intuitive modeling tools, Modo quickly gained popularity among artists for its ease of use, robust sculpting features, and powerful subdivision surface modeling capabilities, making it a favorite in the fields of game development, animation, and visual effects.

In 2012, Luxology merged with Foundry, which helped expand Modo’s reach and development resources. Over the years, Modo evolved with advanced rendering, rigging, and animation tools, carving a niche as a versatile, artist-friendly tool.

However, with recent industry shifts and Foundry’s growing focus on VFX and compositing tools like Nuke and Katana, the decision was made to wind down Modo’s development, with version 17.1 slated as the final release
