70% of India’s VFX Revenue Comes from International Projects

Joseph Bell, a seasoned expert in the VFX industry, has released the Visual Effects World Atlas, offering a comprehensive look at the global VFX community. Frustrated by the lack of objective information about the industry, Bell created the atlas to showcase the talent and skillsets of VFX artists worldwide.

The atlas is available for free, aiming to build a global sense of community among VFX professionals.

Here are the Key points for India from Visual Effects World Atlas 2024

  • 4,000 studios in India total. Key hubs are Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad, and Chennai.
  • 260,000 people working across the sector (not just VFX) in India.
  • International projects contribute nearly 70% of VFX revenue in India,
  • Mumbai (36% of the total workforce in India in our study), Chennai (16%), and Hyderabad (15%), followed by Pune and Bangalore each representing around 12%.

Domestic demand is also rising, with local producers seeking work from larger Indian firms. However, challenges remain, including the need for a highly skilled workforce, better production incentives, formal education, and advanced infrastructure.

To support the sector’s growth, the Indian government established the AVGC Promotion Task Force in 2022 and introduced state-level incentives in Karnataka, Kerala, and Telangana. India’s cost advantage and talent diversity position it as a growing global hub for AVGC content creation.

Bell emphasizes that while technology often steals the spotlight, the industry is driven by human talent. The Visual Effects World Atlas is available for download at vfxatlas.com
