Nuke 17 just introduced one of the simplest but most useful workflow upgrades for compositors. It is a brand new way to create Backdrop nodes, and it actually makes organizing your node graph faster than ever.
Here is how it works..
- Shift + Z
- Drag.
- Release.
- Backdrop done.

Nuke automatically creates a Backdrop that perfectly fits the selection area.
No more dragging, resizing or adjusting by hand.
You draw the box, Nuke builds the Backdrop.
It is a tiny update, but if you create Backdrops constantly, this is going to make your Nuke life a lot smoother.
And just like before, Backdrop nodes still keep all their core functionality:
- They visually group your nodes
- Any node inside the Backdrop moves with it
- You can rename it
- Change colors
- Add labels with HTML formatting
- And even control its Z order if you like to layer multiple sections

Nuke 17 finally made organizing node graphs feel modern.
Try it once, you will never go back.
