10 Films Shortlisted for VFX Oscar at 97th Academy Awards

The race for the prestigious Visual Effects Oscar is heating up, as ten films have been shortlisted for the 97th Academy Awards. The Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee selected the contenders, showcasing the year’s best in cinematic innovation and artistry.

On Saturday, January 11, 2025, members of the Visual Effects Branch will have the opportunity to view excerpts from each shortlisted film, accompanied by interviews with the creative teams behind the effects. Following these screenings, branch members will vote to narrow the list to five nominees for the final Oscar consideration.

Shortlisted Films (Alphabetical Order):

  • Alien: Romulus
  • Better Man
  • Civil War
  • Deadpool & Wolverine
  • Dune: Part Two
  • Gladiator II
  • Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
  • Mufasa: The Lion King
  • Twisters
  • Wicked

Nominations voting will run from Wednesday, January 8, 2025, through Sunday, January 12, 2025, with the final nominations being announced on Friday, January 17, 2025.

The 97th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at the Dolby® Theatre at Ovation Hollywood. The event will be broadcast live on ABC, streamed on Hulu, and aired in over 200 territories worldwide, celebrating the year’s best in film.
