The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has unveiled the shortlist for the Best Visual Effects category at the Oscars 2024, featuring an impressive lineup of 17 films pushing the boundaries of cinematic visuals.
Among the frontrunners are “Gladiator 2”, bringing ancient Rome to life with stunning realism; “Dune: Part 2”, expanding its breathtaking desert landscapes; and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire”, delivering colossal creature battles.
Other contenders include “Furiosa”, with its adrenaline-fueled apocalyptic action; “Deadpool & Wolverine”, blending humor and groundbreaking effects; and “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire”, refreshing the franchise with frosty supernatural visuals.
Animation and motion-capture also shine with Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King”, and “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes”, known for lifelike performances. Meanwhile, sci-fi and fantasy dominate with titles like “Alien: Romulus”, “Twisters”, “A Quiet Place: Day One”, and “Wicked”.
Rounding out the list are unique cinematic ventures like “Beetlejuice 2”, “Civil War”, “Better Man”, “Here”, and Netflix’s “Spaceman”, showcasing the diverse applications of visual effects.
