Oscars 2025 : Dune 2 wins Best Visual Effects

The Oscar for Best Visual Effects at the 97th Academy Awards was awarded to Dune: Part Two, recognizing the exceptional work of Paul Lambert, Stephen James, Rhys Salcombe, and Gerd Nefzer. The win marks another triumph for DNEG, which previously secured the VFX Oscar for Dune: Part One, solidifying its dominance in crafting the visual spectacle of Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic.

Building upon the foundation laid by its predecessor, Dune: Part Two elevated the scale and complexity of its visual effects. DNEG’s cutting-edge design and technological advancements were instrumental in delivering a visually immersive experience that transported audiences back to the desolate yet breathtaking world of Arrakis.

The film’s standout visual effects sequences included the opening eclipse, the breathtaking sandworm-riding scenes, the harrowing attack on the spice harvester, and the epic battle of Arrakis. The VFX team also meticulously crafted Giedi Prime’s menacing aesthetic and achieved the distinctive blue eyes of the Fremen using advanced machine learning techniques.

According to the team, a new algorithm was developed to enhance the iconic blue eyes, refining the work from the first film. “We used what we learned from the hundreds of blue-eye shots in Dune: Part One to create a machine learning model that could detect human eyes in an image and generate a precise matte for different parts of the eye,” the VFX team explained.

Beyond character enhancements, Dune: Part Two pushed the boundaries of cinematic world-building with intricate simulations, seamlessly integrated CG elements, and large-scale battle sequences. Denis Villeneuve’s latest installment featured high-octane aerial and land combat, including the visually stunning flight of the dragonfly-like ornithopters, Paul Atreides’ dramatic sandworm ride, and his confrontation with the menacing Feyd-Rautha (played by Austin Butler).

With this latest Oscar win, Dune: Part Two cements its place as a milestone in contemporary VFX, demonstrating the artistry and innovation that continue to shape the future of filmmaking.
