Visual effects (VFX) workers employed by Marvel Studios, Walt Disney Pictures, and Lightstorm Entertainment—the studio behind the “Avatar” franchise—have overwhelmingly ratified their first union contracts with the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), marking a significant milestone in the industry’s labor movement.

These agreements, finalized in May 2025, are the first collective bargaining contracts for VFX professionals at these major studios since their unionization efforts began in 2023. The contracts introduce standard union protections, including overtime pay, eligibility for the Motion Picture Industry Pension and Health Plan, meal penalties, rest periods, and turnaround times.
The Disney/Marvel contract includes wage increases of 4% in the first year and an additional 3.5% in the second year. The Lightstorm Entertainment agreement, covering the “Avatar” VFX team, incorporates provisions for preferential hiring on future sequels, new wage scale rates based on a 40-hour workweek, and protections against technological changes and subcontracting.

IATSE International President Matthew D. Loeb praised the workers’ efforts, stating, “I want to congratulate the members of these VFX bargaining units on negotiating fair contracts that earned such strong support. From when they started this process until today, the leadership and determination shown by these members has been an inspiration.”
This development is seen as a pivotal step toward broader unionization within the VFX industry, aiming to secure better working conditions and recognition for VFX professionals across North America.
