Over half of all animation and VFX jobs in Quebec, including the bustling hub of Montreal, have disappeared since January 1, 2023, according to the Quebec Film and Television Council.
This sharp decline started with last year’s writers’ and actors’ strike in Hollywood and worsened after Quebec revised its tax credit system in March.
The new changes have made the province less attractive to Hollywood producers, who are now looking elsewhere. Although the government claims it is shifting investments toward live-action production, it insists that its VFX and animation tax credits are still competitive.
IATSE recently commented on the situation, warning that any region reliant on tax credits could face similar job losses.
Interestingly, years ago, VFX Soldier was advocating against these tax credits and pushing for tariffs on digital goods transferred overseas, but those efforts didn’t gain much traction.
