The Union Cabinet has approved a proposal to establish the National Centre of Excellence (NCoE) for Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, Comics, and Extended Reality (AVGC-XR). This center, modeled after institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), will serve as the central hub for the country’s animation ecosystem.
The NCoE aims to position India as a leading global content hub, providing cutting-edge content that enhances the nation’s soft power and attracts foreign investments in the media and entertainment sector. The center will be located in Mumbai and will operate as a Section 8 Company under the Companies Act, 2013.
The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) will collaborate with the government to establish this institute, which is dedicated to fostering talent in immersive technologies.
According to the government, the increasing use of AVGC-XR, driven by rapid technological advancements and widespread internet access in India, is expected to grow significantly. To meet this demand, the National Centre of Excellence will serve as the leading institution supporting the AVGC-XR ecosystem in the country.
