GIMP has officially launched version 3.0 of its open-source image editing software, marking the culmination of seven years of development. This highly anticipated update introduces significant new features and improvements, enhancing the software’s capabilities for both casual users and professionals.
The previous major release, GIMP 2.10, debuted in 2018, with development on GIMP 3.0 commencing in 2020. Among the most notable additions is non-destructive editing for frequently used filters, allowing users to tweak applied effects at any time. The update also brings a real-time, on-canvas preview feature for more intuitive editing.

File format support has been expanded, with improved PSD export and compatibility with BC7 DDS files. Additionally, users can now enable paint tools to automatically expand layers as needed.
Text editing has seen substantial refinements, including the ability to apply outlines, shadows, and bevels while retaining full control over fonts and styles. Layer organization has been enhanced with multi-selection functionality, enabling users to move or transform multiple layers simultaneously. The update also introduces improved color management, aligning with GIMP’s ongoing effort to provide a more advanced image editing experience.
